![]() ![]() In the present, Maisie has just begun her own business as a private investigator. There are two story lines going on in Maisie Dobbs – one is set in the present (which, in the context of this book is actually not the present, but in 1929 England), and one in the past, beginning with Maisie as a 14 year old and working its way up to her time as a nurse during WWI. I’d never heard of them until Alison suggested it for Tell Me What to Read. The author was one of the keynote speakers at TLA this year. How have I completely missed this series? On leaving Poland, I exchanged diplomacy for academia and took a doctorate in the literature of the English Romantic Period at Oxford. My work as a diplomat took me from the high point of town twinning in the Tatra Mountains to the low of inspecting the bottom of a Silesian coal mine. After reading English at Cambridge, I decided to find out as much as I could about the wider world so joined the Foreign Office and served in Poland. I grew up on the edge of Epping Forest and was that dreamy kind of child who was always writing stories. My journey to becoming an author has been a roundabout one, taking in many other careers. ![]() ![]() ![]() These four are arguably Seever’s biggest victims. In the light of the renewed interest in the case, WHAT YOU DON’T KNOW explores multi-dimensional characters who are most affected by the Seever investigation: his wife Gloria, detectives Hoskins and Loren, and Sammie, the journalist whose career picked off because of Seever. Seven years after he’s put on death row, the murders start again, in signature Seever style. He’s also the man who raped and killed 33 people and buried them in the crawl space of his house. Jacky Seever is a community do-gooder and a restauranteur who likes to entertain and amuse kids by dressing up like a clown (nothing evil about that). The novel picks up where most crime fiction novels end – after the chase is over and the killer is behind bars, and this makes WHAT YOU DON’T KNOW an intriguing as hell read. WHAT YOU DON’T KNOW by JoAnn Chaney was one of those books I knew I absolutely had to read after checking out the blurb. ![]() ![]() ![]() While the front panel is fine but for a minimal corner scuff, the back panel also has a small scuff an inch below the top edge, and the rear flap has some toning and foxing to its edges (see photos). There are always exceptions to this rule, but unfortunately, “The Last Wish,” is not one of them. As many short stories in a collection are, well, quite short and typically end without any further discussion of what happened in the previous short story, I don’t like them. I prefer my stories on the larger side, full of world building and character development, and complete with a conclusive ending or a second installment that will lead to a conclusive ending. At times the description of sailing through rough seas is strong enough to make the reader almost feel seasick. The book captures the rituals of life at sea and goes into the heart of the action. It tells the story of HMS Compass Rose, a corvette, and HMS Saltash, a frigate, and the crews who sailed them from 1939 to 1945. It focuses on the relationship between Captain George Ericson and a reserve officer who becomes his Number One, Keith Lockhart. Monsarrat described it as the story ‘of one ocean, two ships, and about one hundred and fifty men.’ In a gritty, realistic style the book conveys the joys and the tragedies, the cruelty and the horror of the Battle of Atlantic. In 1951 Nicholas Monsarrat published his fourth book on the naval war, The Cruel Sea. The face of Jack Hawkins looks out from the 1953 poster for The Cruel Sea.
